Visibility of Catalan Language Content Increased by 18 Points Following Google Algorithm Update

• The core update that Google applied in late August 2023 reversed the downward trend in the visibility of content in Catalan.
• As of late February 2024, an increase of 15% is seen in comparison with the initial situation (in 2021) and of 22% in comparison with the worst times of the visibility crisis (late 2022 – mid 2023), which stood at 18% at the initial change in trend.
• The trend lines show a general orientation towards the recovery of Catalan. However, we consider that there is still room for improvement in the area of search result offerings.

Google has lost visitors to two out of three websites in Catalan

• The study analyzed the web traffic of 639 multilingual websites from the academic, public, media and business sectors.
• In 66.5% of the websites analyzed, the Catalan language option has seen its visibility reduced compared to the equivalent content in Spanish.
• There is a strong correlation (80% on average) between traffic in Catalan and Spanish, which means that the Spanish version gains almost one page view for every page that the Catalan version loses.
• The loss of visits is caused by a worse positioning of Catalan content on multilingual pages in Google searches, from May 2022.
